LAURA MULVEY's ESSAY ANALYTICS IN ACCORDANCE WITH RELEVANT MOVIES

Laura Mulvey is a feminist film theorist and is best known for her essay on Visual Pleasure and Narrative Cinema. Mulvey is greatly known for her theory on the subject, sexual objectification on women in the field of media. It was more commonly known as The Male Gaze theory. Being one of the most renowned film theorists in the world, her views and clear proof of misogyny in film opened up the eyes of many. Mulvey's theory on the male gaze helped identify issues with gender in the film industry. Mulvey's theory simply means that the male viewer is the target audience, therefore their needs pleasure are met first, which is basically known as visual pleasure. The essay is based on how women are portrayed in film and the media which is still prevalent and dominated in today's world. This idea brings in the thought of "men do the looking, and women are to be looked at." It is also where women in the media are viewed from the eyes of a man, and that women are represented as passive objects of male desire.

Motivation is a song sung by the American singer Normani. The video begins with young Normani watching a music video countdown show 106 & Park and she daydreams about getting the title "number 1 video in the world". As "motivation" starts playing in the background, the viewers are taken to a transition of Normani from a young girl to a grown woman walking in the middle of the road. the song goes on with Normani and her dance fleet on their feet. This song is particularly Normani addressing a man with whom she wants to have passionate bedroom fun. She is trying to motivate her man not begging him for attention. The last scene in the song where Normani dances in the rain, her clothing, her dance steps, and the angle of the camera for the particular scene proves that it was meant to arouse the one who watches the video. However, the dance steps in the song are clearly noted to be hook steps that will bring visual pleasure to those who watch the video, and also that the male gaze is definitely present.

Bombshell is an empowering film when the outrage of the post #MeToo. The movie was cast by Charlize Theron, Nicole Kidman, Margot Robbie which claims to be a perfect match for the respective roles. The movie is based on a real-life story of strength and payback. Roger Ailes, the chairman of Fox News runs the entire network from the second floor of the building. The story is viewed from the perspectives of three women in the movie. Megyn Kelly, one of the biggest stars in the network prepares to debate President, Trump. Despite her colleagues do not want her to ask about his sexist comments towards women on TV, she does it anyway. She goes on air and asks him about his comments, he spent the rest of the evening tweeting very angrily and abusing Megyn on social media also pushing her followers to turn up against her. When Megyn was taking her time off from work, she was disturbed by her privacy. Gretchen Carlson was the co-host of Fox and Friends but was removed from that spot and give a less valuable job. After enduring sexist comments on air, she gets really weary of it. She meets with her lawyers who tell her that her contract makes it tough for her to fight back in any way- they tell her the story of Rudi Bhakhitar who was fired after not accepting her boss's sexual advances. But Gretchen needs a piece of solid evidence against Roger to pull him down to rags. Kayla Pospisil is a young ambitious woman. She has begun her career there working under Gretchen until she is offered a promotion to another show, the network's biggest show. Kayla to work at a higher level learns that if she meets her boss and speaks to him about her career and achievements, she can get the actual job she wants. On getting the promotion that Kayla has expected, Roger tells her to get up and twirl for him. Roger always believes that in a visual medium there should be more show of legs. He then asks her to show more of her legs until he can see her underwear (very uncomfortable).

Gretchen files a lawsuit against Roger for all the sexual advances with other women in the firm as well. Many including Megyn and Kayla remain silent but later open up for the good of the people. There was no evidence in the beginning but Gretchen had every word of Roger Ailes recorded, thus it served out to be of greater use to the society in bringing out the truth. The three women in the movie play an important role as they are discriminated against on their way of looks and are also objectified as a pleasure tool. There is a means of visual pleasure, male gaze, and active male- passive female displayed in the movie where it brings out the whole theory of Laura Mulvey's theory of the way women are treated on screen- an object of mere satisfaction.
